Milliken Nature Center

In a partnership with the State of Michigan and the Department of Natural Resources, the project team designed a new nature center at Mackinac Island’s Arch Rock Plaza. This 2,000-square-foot facility blends seamlessly with its natural surroundings, with a focus on maximizing natural light and preserving views of the island’s landscape. To enhance the visitor experience, SunGuard SNX 62/27 on Guardian UltraClear low-iron glass was used on the exterior, offering exceptional clarity and transparency while providing solar control. The high visible light transmission and minimal outdoor reflectivity of the glass ensures a bright, welcoming atmosphere. Guardian Bird1st UV glass was incorporated to reduce bird collisions, supporting the center’s commitment to environmental stewardship. Designed with Universal Design principles, the nature center is accessible to all visitors and aligns with the Living Building Challenge and LEED® standards, creating a space that fosters a deeper connection to nature.
