Set in a suburban community, the Richland Two Institute of Innovation (R2i2) is a visionary mixed-use center for learning and public life. This 213,000-square-foot facility strikes an industrial tone while warmly hosting school district administrative offices, a branch of the county library, a conference center, a café and commercial kitchen – and serves as a public high school providing experiential instruction in technology and entrepreneurship to students in their junior and senior years. An exemplar in sustainability and cost-savings, the building includes rooftop photovoltaics, a solar thermal water heater and a wind turbine. SunGuard® SNX 51/23 low-E glass on clear helps reduce unwanted solar heat gain and demand on air conditioning systems. The glass lends a subtle blue hue to the building’s exterior and provides plenty of light to classrooms, corridors and shared public spaces. While zones for young students are securely defined, a glazed central lobby slices through the roofline to deliver shared light and sightlines across people of all ages, stages and sectors in this inspiring community hub.
