Description of the project

The E8 Building in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain, is the result of a design competition to help highlight the ambitious expansion of Alava Technology Park. Architects Juan Coll-Barreu and Daniel Gutierrez of Coll-Barreu Arquitectos have created a remarkable-looking structure, which makes clever use of solar control glass – Guardian SunGuard Solar Light Blue 52.

The building is designed with a climate control strategy in mind, which is based on an internal, isolated waterproof shell and an exterior, ventilated glass envelope that works like a parasol, shading the building from the sun. In winter, the intermediate chamber acts like a mattress, insulating the building from the cold outside. On warm days, the interior façade is cooled by the pressure differences within the envelope system. This results in significant savings in energy consumption and reductions in emissions.
