Description of the project

The European Convention Center in Luxembourg City is a 24-storey high rise-building. The design concept from Schemel & Wirtz is based on two horizontal trays as a base for a series of set bodies that partly penetrate the roof cladding, which are enclosed by a glass hall with an overhanging flying roof. The roof forms the fifth façade, which can be seen from the higher surrounding buildings.

The 300-meter-long square glazed façade is reduced in profile, the sequence of the inner structures and the movement of the visitors can be clearly read day and night. The large ground-level panoramic window with curved glazing offers daylight and a reference to nature. Guardian SunGuard® SuperNeutral (SN) 62/34 coated solar control glass was chosen for the glazed façade. The glass offers high natural light transmission that helps minimize the need for artificial light, while offering excellent solar protection and thermal insulation properties. Guardian SN 62/34 is a double-silver coated solar control glass with a very light neutral grey appearance that has since been upgraded to Guardian SunGuard® SN 63.
