Guardian Lighting Expert Presents New Heatable Glass Solution

To Aviation Executives at IES Event

New glass eliminates snow and ice build-up on aircraft and airport lights

Auburn Hills, Mich., October 29, 2013 – David P. Maikowski, director of Lighting for Guardian Industries, spoke with aviation industry leaders last week about the company’s new product that keeps lenses clear of fog, frost and snow. Maikowski presented Guardian heatable glass for lighting during a panel discussion at the 84th Annual Aviation Lighting Conference.

For pilots navigating aircraft in cold climates, LEDs and other energy-efficient lights present potential problems because they do not generate sufficient heat to melt snow and ice. Guardian has created a heatable glass solution that withstands harsh winter months and strong deviations in weather.

Because the LEDs emit little infrared heat, fog, frost and snow builds up on the luminaire, obstructing light and threatening safety,” Maikowski said. “Our new heatable glass solves the problem because the glass can be warmed as needed with little electricity.”

The result is highly efficient, highly durable fixtures that can be used anywhere safety and high light transmission are critically important; making it ideal for airplanes, airfields and other outdoor applications. The heatable glass is also highly conductive and highly transmissive.

Presented by the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IES) and its Aviation Lighting Committee, the Aviation Lighting Conference brings together airport lighting professionals, including state and Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) officials, consulting engineers, airport maintenance specialists and airfield lighting equipment suppliers. This year’s conference was held at Loews Ventana Canyon, Tucson, AZ on October 20-24, 2013.
